ART 235 - The Seven Creative Categories

ART 235 - Seven Creative Categories
The Project
For this project, I experimented with seven creative categories using one object in order to gain a better understanding of each one. I chose a ladle as my object and brainstormed different ways it could be presented to portray each category.
The Seven Creative Categories
Combinations: Combing two different things to make a new recognizable object or idea.

Juxtaposition: Two things put together for a contrasting effect.

Isolation: Used with negative space to focus the audience on the subject.

Metaphor or Simile: Conveying or emphasizing a meaning by the use of an object or idea.

Change of Context/Environment: Contrasting recognizable things with objects they aren’t usually associated with.

Physical/Shape Similarity: Taking shapes and objects that are similar and connecting them.

Material Change/Swap/Focus: Taking an object and presenting it using an unusual material.
Because you see two recognizable things, a ladle and a pool, but you don’t expect them to be together. And yet, because it is feasibly possible, it makes sense.
You see the same thing but in two different positions. On one the water is sloshing out but on the other, it’s pouring out.
You see a lineup of almost identical kitchen utensils and then a ladle with a different design. It draws your eye to the ladle, and that’s the goal of isolation.
The idea is that life and growth can fit in a ladle. Is it signifying that food is growth or that growth is in everyday items? It’s an image that can make you think.
Earth in space is not a new concept, but the concept that the earth is held in space by something so human as a ladle is unlikely, which is what makes this image interesting.
A ladle is almost the same shape as a shower head, and yet it couldn't possibly serve the same function. I like the fact that the holes in a shower head that make it so useful, would make a ladle useless.
An orange and an orange peel could possible take on that shape, although it is very unlikely it would be used as a ladle. But the idea that it could, makes this idea work.
